Micro-Course 3 — Development of Emotions

Core Module 2 · Mentalis Method™ — Pillar 2

Course Overview

Emotions evolve and mature throughout the lifespan. In this micro-course, we explore how emotional capacities develop from infancy through adulthood, and how family dynamics, relationships, culture, and lived experience shape emotional expression, regulation, and resilience over time.

We begin with an overview of emotional development in early life, examining how attachment, caregiving, and early environments influence emotional awareness and regulation. You will learn how emotional patterns formed in childhood often persist into adulthood, shaping relationships, stress responses, and self-perception.

The course then explores emotional development across adolescence and adulthood, highlighting how emotional needs, coping strategies, and regulation skills change with life transitions, relationships, and personal challenges. You will gain insight into why emotional responses evolve over time and how social, cultural, and relational contexts influence emotional expression.

Throughout the course, developmental theory is connected to practical understanding. By recognizing how emotional development unfolds across the lifespan, you will cultivate greater empathy for yourself and others, support emotional self-awareness, and develop deeper self-compassion. By the end of this micro-course, you will have a clearer understanding of emotional development and how past and present experiences shape emotional life, providing a foundation for healthier emotional regulation and more attuned relationships in everyday life.
